The Schneider Electric Conzerv Solution
Measure
- EM series meters are used at the mains of the DG sets for accurate measurement of energy generated by the set as well as to monitor and maintain other operating parameters like voltage, current, frequency, kW etc.
- For DG sets, automatic start / stop (AMF) relays as well as automatic synchronizing relays are provided where the number of DG sets are more than one and are operated in parallel.
Detect
Schneider Electric Conzerv carries out detailed energy audits to detect opportunities for energy efficiency. These audits cover total energy use in the IT industry like air-conditioning, lighting, electrical network etc.
Control
Our energy management system software (EMS) helps in effective energy usage and control.
- The meters indicated in the first step of measure can be networked to the system, enabling accurate recording of the operating parameters in real time.
- The system also generates various reports based on analysis of the readings of the meters
- The reports are inbuilt and customized to the specific requirements of the IT industry - like consumption pattern of the air-conditioning compressors, operation of pumps in the chilled and condenser water system, operation of AHUs etc.
- The system can also incorporate non-electrical parameters like temperature, humidity etc. which are critical in maintaining comfort conditions
- The Energy Management System controls the DG efficiency by monitoring the electricity generated as well as diesel consumption using a flow meter. The software will calculate the units per litre generation and DG efficiency on a continuous basis
- The load pattern and other reports generated by the software will help in controlling the load on the DG circuit so that maximum efficiency of the DG can be achieved.
- Analysis of the data and reports by the Energy Management System can lead to many areas for savings in energy by proper control measures.
Major areas
Harmonics
- One of the major loads in IT industry is that of UPS. It also incorporates a number of energy efficient equipment like variable speed drives for different pumps, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and electronic chokes etc. for lighting etc.
- Use of such equipment can lead to generation of unwanted harmonics in the electrical network
- Presence of harmonics in the network can lead to problems in the electrical network of the IT industry like higher neutral currents, over heating, excess cable heat and transformer losses etc. leading to excess energy consumption, damages to equipment like computers, monitors etc.
Air-conditioning
The standard specific energy consumption of the components of the air-conditioning network is as follows:
Compressors
- Reciprocating Chiller (>50 TR) : 0.66 - 0.67 kW/TR
- Centrifugal Chiller (>150 TR) : 0.59 - 0.65 kW/TR
- Screw Chiller (>150 TR) : 0.55 - 0.60 kW/TR
- Chilled Water Pump : 0.10 - 0.12 kW/TR
- Condenser Water : 0.085 - 0.12 kW/TR
- Cooling Tower : 0.03 - 0.1 kW/TR
- AHU : 3000 - 6000 CFM/kW
- FCU : 8000 - 10000 CFM/kW
The use of proper meters in the network helps in monitoring and maintaining the specific energy consumption within the desired limits.
Lighting
- Use of energy efficient lighting fixtures to reduce lighting energy consumption as well as to reduce heat load in the conditioned areas to reduce power requirement of air-conditioning compressors
- Maintaining optimum operating parameters like operating voltage, lux levels etc.
- Switch off when not required
- Modify lighting layout
- Select light colors for interiors
- Use occupancy sensors especially in corridors, toilets etc.
- Provide individual switches for lights as far as possible, as the number of operational workstations is variable
Other Areas
- Maintaining optimum room temperature in the conditioned areas - over cooling leads to excess energy consumption
- Balancing of air flow in the conditioned areas
- Proper use of AHUs as per actual requirement of air flow and number of air changes as well as maintaining AHUs in good condition
- Building envelope, minimizing heat gain to conditioned areas through glazed windows and heat loss through open doors and windows
- Avoid heat producing equipment inside the room: Placing UPS Battery, ovens, etc away from conditioned areas
- Proper maintenance of compressors, chilled and condenser water circuits, maintaining optimum operating parameters like suction / discharge pressure, temperature etc.
